It's February already...can you believe it!? Well, I'm excited...because it means I have an excuse to watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding again! As if I needed an excuse. That's right. The lovely Deb from Kahakai Kitchen is hosting this month and she has chosen the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

So rent it, buy it, borrow it, pull it out of your stack of favorite chick-flicks and spend a couple of hours with John Corbett. I mean the whole cast. I'm already craving some Greek eats. Can't wait to see what everybody makes this month.

Tortilla Soup roundup

It's time to roundup all the inspiring dishes that we gathered from watching TORTILLA SOUP!

AmiNYC says "This soup comes together so quickly, you’re done almost as soon as you start. Everything in one pot, everything at one time. Can’t possibly be easier than that." Check out her delicious Tortilla Soup with toasted spices I can almost smell from here over at From the Bookshelf.

Glennis of Can't Believe We Ate brings us Christina's World Famous Tortilla Soup, of which she says "Seriously yum...this is one of the very best Tortilla soups I’ve ever had. So far."

Inspired by Carmen's Nuevo Latino style of cooking, Deb from Kahakai Kitchen decided to make some beautiful "arty" bowls of Tortilla Soup. Not only was it tempting to the eyes, but also satisfying and delicious in the belly. I'm loving the guacamole in the bowl. So fun!

Trying my first version that was actually sort of sweet and laced with cinnamon over at girlichef; I loved the deep red satisfying broth in this Ancho Chicken Tortilla Soup.

Remember, Food 'n Flix is going ON THE ROAD! I will be hosting the first traveling edition over at girlichef.

New Flick: Tortilla Soup

Hi guys! Sorry about the delay in posting our next flick pick. Our next flick is Tortilla Soup! A food-lover's dramedy, Tortilla Soup is about a widowed chef who lost his sense of taste when his wife passed away...with three adult daughters still living at home.

With each daughter trying to find her place in the world...both in their love lives and their jobs...the only sense of constancy is the comfort of the table and the food they've come to know over the years.

Fights, meals, lessons, laughter...Tortilla Soup has it all. Bring it to your living room and then head into the kitchen to cook something up inspired by the movie.

And, if you know me...you know I've got to say...that if you just so happen to cook up a big, steaming pot of this movie's namesake, please join me in my quest to try as many versions of Tortilla Soup as I (with your help) can, over at girlichef!

Woman on Top ROUNDUP

Well, our roundup this month is short, but definitely sweet!

"All her life, Isabella has suffered from motion sickness. Because of her illness she couldn't play much with other children. She stayed at home and learned how to cook, becoming a renowned chef as an adult. She fell in love with Toninho and they opened a restaurant together, with Isabella stuck in the kitchen and Toninho out front taking the credit." (source Wikipedia) And so starts our movie...from Brazil to San Francisco, Isabella captures hearts with her passion in the kitchen. Let's see how she inspired us in the kitchen this past month or so...

I (Heather from girlichef) was ready to bring in the sunshine, tropics, and fresh ocean breeze with a colorful bowl of Moqueca (Brazilian Fish Stew) after watching this fun, sexy chic flick! Bring on the warm weather.

Kim from Stirring the Pot took some "me" time to kick back with Pomegranate Sodas and a Spicy-Sweet Pretzel mix while enjoying the film! Well, I am all for "me" time...although I probably couldn't resist the urge to throw a splash of booze in these beauties!

Deb from Kahakai Kitchen made some fruity and refreshing Passion Fruit Batidas that capture the "sexy, passionate, fun feeling of Woman on Top"! Yes they do...and now I wish I'd made some with my Moqueca.

I hope that more people will join us on our next trip to the movies! My partner in crime, Ree is on hiatus right now, so I'll be hosting the next show, as well. The announcement will be up soon (though you can take a peek over on the sidebar if you're anxious to get started)...and I'll also be adding a "linky" for you to add your posts to from now on.

Waitress Roundup

Months back, when I knew I wanted to choose this film as December's selection, I couldn't have imagined how much I'd come to have in common with it. When I found out this November I was expecting my first child, it didn't take very long for me to connect back to the film I selected for Food 'n Flix and reflect to myself about how life really can surprise you when you least expect it, and direct you towards change you when you most need it. Though some may say 'Waitress" is just a chick flick, I believe the beauty of this film is that it speaks to the heart of all of us that has ever stumbled upon a way out of what was and into what should be in the places we were least likely to find who we were meant to be.

To begin with I, Ree of Milk, Sugar, Musings & Love, wondered if the combination of green and apples and cranberries would be too tart for a pie. I was won over before it was done baking when my kitchen was transformed into a quintissential New England home during the holidays; Dancing medley of cinnamon, orange, cranberry and warmed, sweetened green apple wafting through the air. Much to my surprise, This Green Apple and Cranberry Pie, served with homemade vanilla ice cream and a dallop of fresh whip cream became and instant favorite!

Inspired by Jenna's ability to turn her emotions into something delectable and creative, Heather of Girlichef('s) The Holidays Are Making Me NUTS Pie speaks for itself. After one look of the mixed salted nuts baked in between a layer of sweet, gooey goodness, I think we'd all gladly go nuts if it meant we were indulging in a piece of this delicious creation.

Rather than changing the title of her blog to "...cooking, eating and living (occasionally) healthy in Paradise!" Deb in Hawaii turned to 'The Good Neighbor' cookbook for a way out of the overindulged-over-the-holiday-blues and made something green. Her charming individual tarts "Too Much Indulging is Making Me Green" Crustless Spinach Quiche is sure to please anyone with a craving for something lighter that doesn't sacrifice one bit of the satisfaction you're sure to taste in every bite.

Tina from Life in the Slow Lane at Squirrel Head Manor also went savory with a mouthwatering Beef & Guinness Pie and since her home life is not even close to being miserable like Jenna's, she "made a comforting pie. For dinner, not dessert. My life is good..." I have to agree, Tina. Mine would be a little bit better if only I could get a bite of this pie!

Though there were only a few entries this month, I think we managed to round up a pie for every taste...and any mood. Thank you for your submissions, Ladies!

The Ramen Girl Round-up!

Do you believe in the redemptive powers of noodles? Do you have faith that a flavorful broth tended to with heart and emotions, as well as skill...can transform your mood? How about finding your calling in a place previously foreign to you? The Ramen girl is a story that will make you hungry and eager to travel...and eat magical bowls of Ramen all at the same time. Far-fetched? Perhaps. But isn't that the fun in it? Being taken out of your skin for a couple hours and landing in Japan...ready to cast off your needy, sorry self and become confident and renewed? A foodie chick-flick at its finest.

Let's see what inspiration everybody drew from our November (turned December) flick... The Ramen girl.

Deb from Kahakai Kitchen says that "a girl needs a good chick flick now and then..." and I totally agree! I remember Deb doing her first review of The Ramen Girl, and she is just so awesome that she made a variation on her first dish and joined us this month! Deb made an Asian Pesto Udon that was "A little smoky--I used "smokehouse" almonds, a little kick of ginger and creaminess from the almonds and the coconut milk, this is a unique sauce that tastes great on the thick noodles. I tried it both hot and cold and I am not sure which way I like it best--texturally I preferred it warm, but some of the flavors like the ginger seem to come out more when it is cold. I liked this a lot, it is different but really good."

Tina from Life in the slow lane at Squirrel Head Manor is battling a nasty cold that foiled her plans, so she combined two unlikely friends...chicken soup and ramen...okay, not that unlikely...to come up with a comforting bowl of Chicken Ramen Noodles this month!

Kim from Stirring the Pot went a different route...she didn't make soup...but she did spend 15 hours on her labor of love Italian Braised Beef w/ Root Veg...and ate it over some fat noodles! Kim says "In the movie The Ramen Girl, the broth for the ramen noodle soup was the heart of the recipe. In Symon's Italian Braised Beef, the sauce is the heart of the recipe. Full of complex and robust flavors, which have cooked and simmered for hours upon hours, it is what makes this recipe so good." .

I (Heather from girlichef) watched this movie a few times...and always find myself wanting to lessons from a Ramen Master!! I'm so easily allured by food, learning, history, and new cultures. What can I say? I wanted a flavorful broth filled with fat noodles and tasty goodies and think I accomplished that with my Noodle Soup w/ Pork, Beans Sprouts, and Spinach!

Let's not forget Ree from Milk, Sugar, Musings & Love...my partner in crime over here...she was "excited to step outside of my culinary comfort zone to make something with a Japanese flare inspired by the film. This recipe was simple, quick and delicious. I loved the shrimp especially!" She cooked up some mouthwatering Ginger Glazed Mahi & Shrimp. Looks pretty comfortable to me.

Our roundup was short...but oh-so-tasty this month! Thanks to everybody who participated...my mouth is watering. Completely!

December '10 Flick: Waitress

As Jenna becomes increasingly disenchanted by her unhappy marriage to Earl, she begins to hide money away and set her sights on winning a pie-baking contest, hoping to earn enough money to eventually leave. When she finds herself pregnant, this quandary complicates her plan. She continues to work at Joe's diner, along with her two friends Dawn and Becky, charming customers, putting up with her sour boss, and the one thing she does find fulfilling, create and bake phenomenal pies.

When the new, handsome doctor arrvies in town...with his wife, he finds himself attracted to his pregnant patient, Jenna. Further complicating her situation, she returns and gives into this attraction. As Jenna's pregnancy advances, she realizes she needs more in order to achieve the happiness she craves. Will she find it in the places she's always looked, or will she muster the courage to finally create the recipe to her own piece of joy.

Watch this 2007 award-winning, delight of a film and get as creative as you'd like with your recipe. Generally submissions deadline would end the last day of the month, but because I'm a few days late with this post, it's okay if you're a few days late with your submission. Mystic Pizza RoundUp!

This month we took a trip back to the 80's to see a film most of us remember watching for the first time, and for some of us, this was the first time.

By the end of the film the only thing we were left to wonder about is what we'd put in our pizza...or soup! Or whatever dish it was this movie inspired for you.

It would be no great surprise to anyone who knew me (Ree @ Milk, Sugar, Musings and Love) that given my first movie selection, I would choose a movie with the word 'pizza' in the title. After all, It is my favorite food that isn't ice cream.

What did surprise me was how creative everyone got this month. Thank you all for getting "Mystic" and your delicious additions to this months roundup.

Heather from Girlichef took her family to Germany...in the form of her show-stopping Oktoberfest inspired pizza. Although the kiddos would have preferred something more kid-friendly, This grown-up, complex and fabulous pizza is sure to please anyone old enough to enjoy it with a beer!

Inspired by the the setting in the little fishing town of Mystic, Ct. and the strong Portuguese-American influence, Deb in Hawaii from Kahakai Kitchen made this beautiful, and I imagine, perfect on a cool day, Portuguese Bean Soup.

Debbie from The Friday Friends got a lesson in the old adage 'Just wait until you're a Mom' and finally got around to seeing 'Mystic Pizza' for the first time. Inspired by Breast Cancer Awareness Month/ The Power of Pink and Food 'n Flix, Deb made this pretty as a picture pink inspired fruit pizza.

"There are some people that you can count on to have dessert. Every. Single. Time." Writes Cook of the House at It's a Food Life. I have to admit, I'm one of those people, and with this decadent 4 times Chocolate Pizza, I'd be sure to go back for seconds'.

Kim at Stirring the Pot brings a bit of fun with Slut's Spaghetti inspired by our main characters, the "three young-spirited girls who definitely are crazy about men! A classic 80's movie all about coming of age, learning about yourself, life, and naturally, lots of heartbreak. Typical young girls who I'm sure would love this pasta just about as much as they loved their men."

Since Natashya from Living in the Kitchen with Puppies couldn't locate the flick to watch this month, she drew on her memories from seeing the film twenty-odd years ago and made a "a fan-freaking-tastic pizza on a crispy caraway rye thin crust with a cream cheese sauce, topped with prosciutto, grilled pineapple, baby spinach, black pepper and cilantro" that surely blew EVERYBODY away with its creativeness!

It's a favorite in my house: Soft, chewy crust; Lots and lots of lightly browned, bubbling melted cheese and fresh roasted vegetables. With my long-distance (He's in Paris, France, I'm in Boston, Ma.) husband returning for a month stay, I (Ree @ Milk, Sugar, Musings and Love) kept it traditional and made the 24-hour Stuffed crust Veggie Pizza he hasn't stopped talking about since he first had it a year ago.

Thanks again to everybody who joined us for Mystic Pizza this month...I'd love to sit down to a big table filled with all of these delicious interpretations!

This month we're taking a trip back to the 80's. 1988 to be exact, with the movie 'Mystic Pizza'. The film, starring Annabeth Gish, Lili Taylor, and an introduction of the actress who would come to be known as "America's sweetheart": Julia Roberts, quietly captured a place in the heart of a generation with its tender, funny, and at times, heartbreaking coming-of-age tale.

On this journey we get to know two sisters, Kat and Daisy along with Jojo as they navigate their way through the trials and triumphs of friendship, first love, heartbreak and growing up...

While the residents of their small Connecticut town, Mystic, are becoming increasingly mystified by the irresistible pizza served up at the parlor where the three girls work, they discover that finding out who they are can be just as bewildering.

Many of us remember seeing this movie for the first time.

Break out the aqua net. Don your best neon. And bring your appetite. We're heading back to Mystic for "A slice of Heaven."

I've been entranced by this magical, food-laden, sensual film since the first time I layed eyes on it! If I remember right, I saw it on Valentine's Day...many, many years ago...when it first came out in theaters. With the hubs. Before he was the hubs. I've owned it for many years on dvd, as well...and pull it out every six months or so to be transported to that tranquil little village that gets turned upside down...shaken up...and lands right back on its feet...better for the ware! I was glad to see so many people join in our first pick here at Food 'n Flix...most of whom already held a special place in their movie stack for their own copy...and a few who watched it for the first time!! One quest I've (Heather from girlichef) been on for some time now is find the perfect chocolate cake. I baked up this Chocolate Cake with Chile & Espresso in hopes that I would find the one (the one that looks like Vianne's)....it was good, "but not my favorite."

Christy from Fudge Ripple made a "warm chocolate sauce with a bit of a kick that becomes a bit chewy when it hits the cold shock of ice cream." She thought Roux would approve...I'm positive he would!!

Angie from Cocina Diary not only bakes up a gorgeous Chocolate Ricotta Soufflé in honor of Chocolat, she also conquered a nemesis along the way! I'd love to sink my spoon into that masterpiece!

If you know me, you know my love of molé...and Joanne from Eats Well with Others dug deep and finally made some of that gorgeous sauce she's been "meaning" to make for years. Chiles, raisins, nuts...and chocolate, of course...in Jo's Red Molé. Drool.
